Software Developer at Pivotal Cloud Foundry
London, United Kingdom

About the company
In the cloud era, the application platform will be delivered as a service, often described as Platform as a Service (PaaS). PaaS makes it much easier to deploy, run and scale applications. Some PaaS offerings have limited language and framework support, do not deliver key application services, or restrict deployment to a single cloud. Cloud Foundry is the industry’s Open PaaS and provides a choice of clouds, frameworks and application services. As an open source project, there is a broad community both contributing and supporting Cloud Foundry.
Open cloud and open source are only part of the transformation underway, there is also a massive narrative building around continuous innovation and high velocity agile development. Some open source projects foster inclusiveness and sacrifice velocity while some increase velocity at the expense of transparency. Cloud Foundry.org’s unique vision is to foster contributions from a broad community of developers, users, customers, partners and ISVs while advancing development of the platform at extreme velocity. Cloud Foundry.org exists to provide a platform for the community of customers, partners and even former competitors to collaborate, teach, share and learn together, accelerating the pace of innovation and contribution. The best way to get involved is to join the conversation, contribute to the wiki and fork the code. We call it ‘fierce collaboration’ and we hope you will join us.

Relocation compensation available
The Cloud Foundry engineering team is looking for a few great engineers to join us in building an open source platform that transforms how the world deploys and scales software.
You love shipping features, but know that well factored code is what lets you keep shipping features in the long run. Maybe you get antsy writing code without tests, or perhaps you’re a large-scale system operator interested in leveling-up your coding skills.
Either way, you measure your success by the success of your team; you are interested in learning about distributed systems; and you are excited to work on open source.
Cloud Foundry is co-developed with Pivotal Labs, a leader in the field of agile software development. We are opinionated about how software should be built. We pair program, all-day every-day, because we know it delivers remarkable results. We work in small teams, and rotate between them frequently. We believe in working at a sustainable pace – you’ll typically code hard for 8 hours each day, but then you’re off work to relax, recharge, and refocus.
As part of the London team, you’ll be immersed in all the latest database technologies – Cassandra, Neo4j, Redis, MongoDB, Memcached, Elasticsearch, and more. A solid understanding of these services as well as VM and container technologies (cgroups, LXC, Docker) is a plus.
To make sure you start your day energized, we provide a catered breakfast every weekday morning, and unlimited snacks/drinks are of course available all day. Our collaborative, open-plan office space is filled with talented, like-minded engineers who enjoy taking advantage of our weekly Tech Talks, playing ping pong, and hanging out with their co-workers.
Skills & requirements
Desired Skills/ Experience:
- Operations or Systems Administration experience, particularly on UNIX. (You know what a daemon is and how to restart one. When the daemon won’t start because some other process is listening on the port it needs, you can find and kill the errant process.)
- Experience and/or interest in: Test Driven Development (TDD) and agile methodologies, database technologies, and containerization
- Ability to dive into a polyglot codebase (ruby, Go, more) and contribute while learning
- BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
