Job description
We are seeking a back-end developer to join the platform team. If you’re tired of writing software that never makes it into the pixels of people’s devices and want to build systems that real people will use (and lots of them!), Wattpad is for you. You’ll be deploying to production within your first couple of days and at over 2 billion requests per day, your work will definitely be experienced by many. You don’t just build something that works, you design and implement a system that works beautifully and efficiently for millions of people. Every new feature built is a fun and rewarding challenge, because of the scale. We are boldly transitioning to a microservices architecture using Go in order to handle this scale more efficiently. You’ll be an integral part of not only implementing this new architecture but designing it as well. You’ll be doing this with a team of incredibly smart, diverse people that are a blast to work with.
What you will be doing:
- Designing, building and maintaining large scale distributed systems serving millions of people per day
- Writing new micro services in Go
- Maintaining the existing system in PHP
- Improving reliability and performance of core components
- Working with client teams (web, Android, iOS) to develop support for new features
- Identifying and solving tough problems quickly
- Shipping new production systems quickly and iteratively
- Writing unit tests for all your code
- Researching new technologies to solve tomorrow’s scaling issues
- Contributing to open source
Skills & requirements
- 2+ years experience developing distributed systems in Go, PHP or similar languages
- Experience with various data stores, such as MySQL, Redis, Memcached and DynamoDB
- Experience working with Amazon Web Services or similar
- Passion for software engineering discipline (e.g. unit testing, code reviews, simplicity, etc.)
- A desire to contribute to the broader development community
- Striving for excellence and knowing how to achieve it iteratively
