Job description
At Longshot Systems we build advanced platforms for sports betting analytics and trading.

We are a small start-up company working in a rewarding and challenging industry. You would join our Platform team - a small group of developers that are responsible for designing, developing and maintaining our core infrastructure. The platform you’d be working on is distributed, low latency and safety-critical. It processes thousands of messages per second and carries out complex analysis continuously.

Our client activity is increasing rapidly so there are many scaling issues, technology challenges and general problems for you to get to grips with. Our stack is predominantly built around Golang, Postgres and RabbitMQ. We integrate a lot of open source into our work and contribute back regularly.

We have an office dog called Minos and he’s a beagle. He’s about to go on paternity leave for a while, but he’ll be back. You may be required to cover some of his responsibilities from time to time. We can send you a pic if you need it to help in your decision making process.

We've got a pretty relaxed atmosphere with team lunches / after work drinks a regular occurrence. Our customary office hours are week days, 10 til 6. We don't much like peak rush hour. If that doesn't suit, let us know and we can talk, we're flexible. We work full time from our Marylebone, London office which is close to Baker Street tube.

Core responsibilities:

Develop highly reliable, low latency components in our distributed system
Join and shape the discussion on future and existing architecture
Produce clean, testable code that is maintainable and robust
Work directly with product owners

Skills & requirements
The ideal candidate will have a strong software engineering background, with broad experience across a range of topics related to general high performance computing such as multi-threading, networking, profiling and optimisation. This is a really exciting time for the company and the role will suit a technical person with a flair for creative problem-solving.

Significant software engineering skills and experience
Strong academic record and a degree with a high computing or mathematical content e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Physics from a leading university
Experience in general systems languages (Java, C++ etc) to a high professional standard, ideally with Golang among them.
Broad exposure to modern application architectures built around databases and messaging systems
Experience in distributed systems, web technologies, test frameworks, continuous integration and also monitoring and debugging of highly available components.
You should be happy traversing the stack all the way down to find bugs and not be afraid of a bit of strace or valgrinding.
Proficient on Linux platforms with knowledge of various scripting languages
Takes pride in engineering excellence and encourages best practice in others
A systematic, analytical approach to tackling problems and designing solutions
